GDS Salary: Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) Guide
1. Introduction to India Post Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) Careers
The Department of Posts, operating under the Ministry of Communications, manages the world's largest postal system. To serve the extensive rural population, India Post employs **Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS)**. These extra-departmental employees manage rural branch post offices, distribute mail, and handle digital banking services under the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB).
Unlike permanent departmental employees who receive a standard monthly basic salary, Gramin Dak Sevaks receive a specialized allowance package called the **Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA)**. This system compensates GDS based on their daily work shift hours, offering job stability, Dearness Allowance (DA) revisions twice a year, and structured pension options.

- House Rent Allowance (HRA): GDS employees posted in semi-urban areas receive **10% HRA** of their base TRCA.
- Office Maintenance Allowance (OMA): BPMs who operate branch offices in private properties receive a flat OMA of **₹500 per month** to cover rent and upkeep.

Contributions deducted from a GDS monthly salary slip include:
Service Discharge Benefit Scheme (SDBS): A monthly contribution of **10%** of the base TRCA is deducted for the pension scheme (equivalent to NPS Lite), with a matching contribution from the government.
Extra-Departmental Group Insurance Scheme (EDGIS): A flat monthly contribution of **₹50** is deducted for life cover.
5. Career Path and 8th Pay Commission Projections
Gramin Dak Sevaks have clear paths for career progression:
GDS→ **MTS (Multi Tasking Staff)** → **Postman / Mail Guard** → **Postal Assistant (PA) / Sorting Assistant (SA)**.
After completing 3 years of continuous service, GDS employees can appear for departmental examinations to secure permanent Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) roles. After 5 years of service, they can transition to regular Postman positions.
Under the upcoming **8th Pay Commission**, a fitment factor of **2.57x to 2.81x** is projected. If implemented, starting TRCA bases will increase significantly (e.g., Level 1 BPM starting TRCA will rise to approximately ₹31,000 per month, and Level 2 BPM starting TRCA will rise to approximately ₹37,000 per month), leading to higher in-hand salaries.
