Understanding the Army & Defence Pension Calculation Formula
Serving in the Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force) grants a secure post-retirement package under the central government regulations. The army pension calculation formula relies strictly on three primary factors: last drawn basic pay, total years of qualifying service, and age at retirement.
Following the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission (7th CPC), military pensions were updated to ensure parity, leading to standardizations in basic service pensions, disability elements, and commutation factors.
1. Service Pension Calculation
Personnel who retire after completing their mandatory service term receive a Service Pension. The standard formula is:
The minimum qualifying service required to earn this pension is 15 years for JCOs/PBORs and 20 years for Commissioned Officers.
2. Pension Commutation and Restoration Rules
Armed forces personnel are allowed to commute (sell) up to 50% of their gross basic pension in exchange for a lump-sum amount at the time of retirement. The commuted portion is deducted from the monthly basic pay. However, Dearness Relief (DR) is still calculated on the original gross pension.
The purchase factor is based on the pensioner's age on their next birthday. The commuted amount is fully restored to the pensioner's monthly pay after completing 15 years from the date of commutation.
7th CPC Commutation Purchase Factor Table
| Age on Next Birthday | Purchase Factor | Age on Next Birthday | Purchase Factor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 35 Years | 9.090 | 50 Years | 8.925 |
| 40 Years | 9.075 | 55 Years | 8.733 |
| 45 Years | 9.025 | 60 Years | 8.393 |
3. Disability Pension Element
For personnel retired on medical grounds or boarded out due to service-related injuries, a Disability Element is added to their service pension:
- Service Attribute disability: 30% of last drawn basic pay for 100% disability (prorated for lower percentages, e.g., 50% disability gets 15%).
- War Injury attribute disability: 60% of last drawn basic pay for 100% disability (prorated).
4. Retirement Gratuity
Upon retirement, defence personnel receive a lump sum gratuity calculated based on service tenure and last drawn basic pay + Dearness Relief (DR):
Under 7th CPC guidelines, the maximum gratuity payout is capped at ₹20 Lakhs (₹20,00,000), which is subject to increment upon DR hikes exceeding certain thresholds.
