DGP Salary: Pay Scales, Ranks, Slabs & Allowances
1. Introduction to DGP (Director General of Police) Careers
The **Director General of Police (DGP)** is the highest rank within the Indian Police Service (IPS) in a state or Union Territory. A state's DGP heads the police department, coordinates state security policy, and directs crime prevention and public safety programs.
As senior IPS officers, DGPs are placed under highly structured pay levels governed by the 7th Central Pay Commission. In addition to premium basic scales, senior police officers receive excellent allowances, such as Dearness Allowance (DA), HRA circles, transport options, and comprehensive pension contributions.
2. Rank-wise IPS Pay Slabs & Matrix Structures
The rank structure and corresponding basic pay scales under the 7th CPC are detailed below:
- State DGP (Level 16): The highest police officer in a state circle. State DGPs receive a fixed monthly basic pay of **₹2,25,000**.
- Central Organization DG (Level 17): Applicable to Directors of IB, CBI, BSF, or CRPF. They receive a fixed monthly basic pay of **₹2,50,000**.

3. Allowances Breakdown: HRA, DA, Transport, and Uniform Perks
To support state operations, senior IPS officers receive several allowances:
- Dearness Allowance (DA): Revised twice a year, DA is calculated as a percentage of basic pay and currently stands at **50%** of basic.
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): HRA is based on the posting location: Class X cities receive **30% HRA**, Class Y receive **20% HRA**, and Class Z towns receive **10% HRA** of their basic pay. Officers provided with government bungalows receive 0% HRA.
- Transport Allowance (TPTA): If senior officers do not use official vehicles, they receive a transport allowance of **₹7,200 + DA** (in higher TPTA cities) or **₹3,600 + DA** (in other cities).
- Uniform & Sash Allowance: A flat allowance of **₹20,000 per year** (approximately ₹1,667 per month) is paid to cover uniform maintenance.
4. Mandatory Salary Slip Deductions: GPF, GIS, and Health Insurance
Contributions deducted from an IPS officer's monthly salary slip include:
IPS Provident Fund (GPF): A mandatory provident fund contribution, typically set at **10%** of basic pay.
Group Insurance Scheme (GIS): A flat monthly contribution of **₹400** is deducted for life cover.
CGHS / Health Scheme: A flat monthly contribution of **₹1,000** is deducted for healthcare benefits.
5. Career Progression and 8th Pay Commission Projections
IPS officers progress through a structured rank hierarchy:
Assistant Superintendent (ASP)→ **Superintendent of Police (SP)** → **Deputy Inspector General (DIG)** → **Inspector General (IG)** → **Additional Director General (ADGP)** → **Director General of Police (DGP)**.
Under the upcoming **8th Pay Commission**, a fitment factor of **2.57x to 2.81x** is projected. If implemented, starting basic pays will rise significantly (e.g., State DGP starting basic will rise to approximately ₹5,78,000, and Central DG starting basic will rise to approximately ₹6,42,000), raising monthly in-hand salaries.
