CDS Salary: Rank-wise Pay, MSP & Slabs Guide
1. Introduction to Combined Defence Services (CDS) Careers
The Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), is the premier route for recruiting commissioned officers into the Indian Armed Forces. Selected candidates undergo rigorous training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Officer Training Academy (OTA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and Air Force Academy (AFA).
Once commissioned, officers are placed under structured pay levels governed by the 7th Central Pay Commission. Defence officers enjoy not only a premium basic scale but also unique compensation components such as Military Service Pay (MSP), Siachen deployment packages, high altitude field perks, and excellent healthcare benefits.
2. Rank-wise CDS Pay Matrices & Slabs
The rank structure and corresponding basic pay scales under the 7th CPC are detailed below:
- Lieutenant (Level 10): The starting rank for commissioned officers. Basic pay ranges from **₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500**.

- Cadet Trainees: Officer cadets receive a fixed monthly stipend of **₹56,100** during their training period.
3. Allowances Breakdown: MSP, HRA, TPTA & Siachen Allowances
To support officers and recognize the unique demands of military service, several allowances are provided:
- Military Service Pay (MSP): A flat monthly allowance of **₹15,500** is paid to all officers from Lieutenant to Brigadier rank.
- Dearness Allowance (DA): Calculated on basic pay + MSP, DA currently stands at **50%** of the combined amount.
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): Officers posted in Class X cities receive **30% HRA**, Class Y cities receive **20% HRA**, and Class Z towns receive **10% HRA** of their basic pay.
- Transport Allowance (TPTA): Paid to cover commuting costs. Higher TPTA cities receive **₹7,200 + DA**, while other cities receive **₹3,600 + DA**.
- Siachen and Field Area Allowances: Officers deployed in high-risk areas receive special allowances, such as the Siachen allowance of **₹42,500 per month** or High Altitude Category I/II allowances of **₹16,900 per month**.
4. Mandatory Salary Slip Deductions: DSOP, AGIF & ECHS
Deductions from a commissioned officer's monthly salary slip include:
DSOP (Defence Services Officers Provident Fund): A mandatory retirement fund contribution, typically set at **10%** of basic pay + MSP.
AGIF (Army Group Insurance Fund): A flat monthly deduction of **₹5,000** for life insurance and survivorship benefits.
ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme): A flat monthly contribution of **₹1,000** to secure post-retirement healthcare benefits.
5. Career Progression and 8th Pay Commission Projections
Officers commissioned through the CDS exam progress through a structured rank hierarchy:
Lieutenant→ **Captain (after 2 years)** → **Major (after 6 years)** → **Lieutenant Colonel (after 13 years)** → **Colonel (selection-based)** → **Brigadier** → **Major General** → **Lieutenant General** → **General / Chief of Defence Staff (CDS)**.
Under the upcoming **8th Pay Commission**, a fitment factor of **2.57x to 2.81x** is projected. If implemented, starting basic pays will rise significantly (e.g., Lieutenant starting basic will rise to approximately ₹1,44,000, and Captain starting basic will rise to approximately ₹1,57,500), leading to higher in-hand salaries.
