NEET PG Age Eligibility Criteria 2026

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Postgraduate) or NEET PG is the single window entrance examination for admission to MD/MS/PG Diploma Courses across India. Given the rigorous and lengthy nature of medical education, many candidates wonder about the age limits associated with this examination.

According to the official guidelines mandated by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) and the National Medical Commission (NMC), there is absolutely NO upper or lower age limit to appear for the NEET PG exam.

Unlike UPSC, Banking, or Defence exams, medical specialization does not discriminate by age. Whether you are 24 or 45, as long as you meet the academic qualifications, you can write NEET PG.

Primary Eligibility Requirements

Since age is not a factor, candidates must strictly adhere to the academic and regulatory criteria. To be eligible for NEET PG 2026, a candidate must fulfill the following:

  • MBBS Degree: The candidate must possess an MBBS degree or Provisional MBBS Pass Certificate recognized as per the provisions of the NMC Act, 2019.
  • Registration: The candidate must possess a permanent or provisional registration certificate of MBBS qualification issued by the NMC or State Medical Council (SMC).
  • Internship Completion: The candidate must have completed or be likely to complete the 12-month mandatory rotatory internship by the prescribed cutoff date for that academic year (usually falls around June/August of the exam year, but varies based on Supreme Court/NBE orders).

Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs)

Indian citizens or Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who obtained their Primary Medical Qualifications from medical colleges outside India must have qualified the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (Screening Test) conducted by the NBE. They must be registered with the NMC/SMC and must have completed their mandatory internship to appear in NEET PG.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Is there an upper age limit for NEET PG 2026?

No, the National Board of Examinations (NBE) does not specify any upper age limit for appearing in the NEET PG examination. Any candidate fulfilling the educational criteria can apply.

2. I took a gap of 5 years after my MBBS. Can I still attempt NEET PG?

Absolutely. Gap years or age do not disqualify you from attempting NEET PG as long as you hold a valid MBBS degree, have a registration certificate from NMC/SMC, and have completed your 1-year internship.

3. Are there age limits for securing government jobs after NEET PG?

While NEET PG has no age limit, various state and central government job recruitments (like UPSC CMS or State Medical Officer posts) may have specific upper age limits which you must check independently based on state government rules.

4. Can an NRI/Foreign national appear for NEET PG?

Foreign nationals are eligible and do not necessarily need NMC registration at the time of the exam. However, if they qualify and are admitted to a PG course, NMC grants them temporary registration limited only to the medical college/institution where they pursue PG studies.

5. What if my internship completes one day after the cutoff date?

NBE is very strict regarding the internship cutoff date. If your internship finishes even one day after the prescribed cutoff, you will be deemed ineligible for that academic year's NEET PG exam.
