GATE 2026 Educational Eligibility Criteria
Because there is no age restriction, the entire eligibility framework for GATE rests on a candidate's academic qualifications.
To be eligible for GATE 2026, a candidate must fulfill ONE of the following conditions:
- Currently Studying: The candidate must be currently enrolled in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program (B.E., B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Sc. (Research), B.S., B.Pharm, MBBS, etc.).
- Already Graduated: The candidate has already completed any government-approved degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts.
Why Does GATE Have No Age Limit?
GATE is primarily designed as a comprehensive assessment of a candidate's understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science. It is used for two main purposes:
- Higher Education: Admissions to Master's programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering/Technology/Architecture and Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Arts and Science, in institutions supported by the MoE and other Government agencies.
- PSU Recruitment: Direct recruitment to Group A level posts in Central government, i.e., Senior Field Officer (Tele), Senior Research Officer (Crypto) and Senior Research Officer (SNT) in Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India, and executive posts in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like IOCL, NTPC, ONGC, PowerGrid, etc.
Because education is a lifelong pursuit, the IITs and IISc (the organizing institutes) do not place an age cap on candidates seeking higher learning.
Crucial Note on PSU Recruitment Age Limits
Warning: While GATE itself has no age limit, the PSUs that recruit through GATE DO have strict age limits!
If your sole purpose for writing GATE is to secure a job in a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) like ONGC, IOCL, or NTPC, you must check the specific age criteria of that PSU. Most PSUs set an upper age limit of 26 to 28 years for General category candidates, with standard relaxations (3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST).
Therefore, a 30-year-old General category candidate can write GATE and score AIR 1, but they will not be eligible for PSU recruitment, though they will still be fully eligible for M.Tech admissions at IITs.

3. Are B.Com or B.A. students eligible for GATE?
Yes, recently the GATE eligibility was expanded. Candidates who have completed or are in the 3rd year or higher of any government-approved degree program in Commerce or Arts can also appear for GATE in relevant subjects (like Humanities and Social Sciences).
4. How long is the GATE scorecard valid?
The GATE scorecard is valid for exactly THREE YEARS from the date of announcement of the results. During this time, it can be used for M.Tech admissions. However, PSUs usually only accept the scorecard of that specific current year.
5. I am 32 years old. Can I get a PSU job through GATE?
If you belong to the General/Unreserved category, it is highly unlikely, as most PSUs limit the age for entry-level executive trainees to 26 or 28 years. If you belong to SC/ST/PwD categories, you may still be eligible for some PSUs depending on their specific age relaxation rules.
