What is the UPSC CDS Age Limit?

The Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), is the gateway for joining the prestigious Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and Officers' Training Academy (OTA). The armed forces require candidates to meet extremely strict age and physical criteria.

Academy-wise Age Criteria

The upper and lower age limits vary slightly depending on the academy you are applying for. The general age bracket falls between 19 and 25 years.

  • Indian Military Academy (IMA): 19 to 24 Years.
  • Indian Naval Academy (INA): 19 to 24 Years.
  • Air Force Academy (AFA): 20 to 24 Years (Relaxable up to 26 years for valid CPL holders).
  • Officers' Training Academy (OTA): 19 to 25 Years (For both Men and Women).

Important Rules Regarding Age & Category

In civilian government examinations, candidates belonging to reserved categories (SC, ST, OBC) generally receive age relaxations. This is NOT the case for the CDS examination. Because this is an entry into the Armed Forces, physical standards and age are non-negotiable.

There are absolutely no category-based age relaxations. The only exception granted is for the Air Force Academy, where candidates holding a valid Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) get a 2-year relaxation, bringing their upper limit to 26 years.

How is the Age Calculated?

UPSC typically calculates your age based on the 1st of January or the 1st of July of the year in which the course is set to commence. This is known as the "Crucial Date". UPSC notifications usually present the age limit in a "Born not earlier than X and not later than Y" format. Using our age calculator helps you bypass manual errors by directly computing your exact age against these dates.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Is there any age relaxation for OBC/SC/ST in the CDS exam?

No. The CDS examination does not provide any age relaxation based on caste or category (OBC, SC, ST). The age limits are strictly uniform for all candidates.

2. Can married candidates apply for the CDS exam?

No, candidates applying for IMA, INA, and AFA must be unmarried. However, for OTA, while the rules generally require unmarried candidates, there are specific provisions for issueless widows and issue-less divorcees under the Women non-technical entry.

3. What is the maximum age limit for women in CDS?

Women candidates can only apply for the Officers' Training Academy (OTA) through the Short Service Commission (SSC) Non-Technical entry. The maximum age limit for OTA is 25 years.

4. How does the CPL relaxation work for the Air Force Academy?

The base upper age limit for AFA is 24 years. However, candidates who possess a valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) issued by the DGCA (India) receive an extension, raising their upper age limit to 26 years.
